Beading for Beginners

By Natasha Vanpelt

In recent years, buying and using eco-friendly, handmade products has become a serious trend. Not only do handmade products require fewer materials and shipping, but buying from crafters - or creating your own items - can be a great way to save money.

One of the most popular types of handmade products available today is jewelry. In particular, beaded jewelry has made a huge comeback in fashion. Many celebrities have been seen sporting beads both on and off-screen in recent months. Not only does handmade jewelry add a one-of-a-kind quality to one's wardrobe, but it can be extremely beautiful as well.

There are hundreds of crafters and artists selling their wares at flea markets, boutiques and websites like Etsy. These lucky designers can create gorgeous beaded items for their own wardrobe, and wear them proudly.

Here are just some of the reason that making your own beaded jewelry can be rewarding:

1. It’s less expensive than buying expensive gemstone jewelry.
2. Handmade items are one of a kind.
3. You can match your jewelry to your favorite clothing.
4. Gift giving is easy when you can custom make items for friends and family.
5. Beadwork is a relaxing hobby.

If you've never considered creating your own accessories before, but want to try it out, it may be difficult to know where to start. What every potential beader needs is an introduction to the fascinating and rewarding art form that awaits them. You will need to know what techniques are available to you, were to find materials and project ideas, and so much more.

Below are some links to the very best beading forums and communities where novice to expert beaders and jewelry designers share information, inspiration and ideas. These sites are highly recommended not only for beginners, but for anyone who loves beading and jewelry design.

If you're worried about your local economy, the environment, or just the quality of what you wear, take the Handmade Pledge and get started creating your own beaded items!
